Barratt Developments Regional Offices

History

Barratt Developments plc. operate two well known national brands Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes. A regional subsidiary Ward Homes operates in the Kent and South East area.

Barratt started building new homes in 1958 with an office in Newcastle. In 1962, Lewis Greensitt, a Newcastle builder and Lawrie Barratt, an accountant, bought control of the company and embarked on a five-year expansion plan. They listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1968 and from 1972, Barratt initiated a programme of rapid expansion through acquisitions including Manchester-based Arthur Wardle and Janes from Luton, and the creation of new companies including the Kingsoak brand.

Barratt's success can be attributed to it's unrivalled marketing. Barratt are quick to introduce innovative and successful marketing strategies including part-exchange, shared equity, and "fees paid" deals. During the early 80's Barratt was the first builder to use national television to advertise their new homes and offers with Patrick Allan and the now famous helicopter.

In the year end to June 1983 Barratt sold a record 16,500 new homes making it Britain's largest house builder. In 1983 and 1984 Barratt was hit by two World in Action ITV documentaries, critical of timber frame new homes and it's "starter" homes.  Two years later, sales had fallen by 50% and Lawrie Barratt abandoned timber frame construction and initiated a new product range that included larger detached homes. Margaret Thatcher purchased a new home from Barratt on a prestigious estate in Dulwich, South London.

Knighted in 1982, Sir Lawrie came out of retirement when the company was badly hit by the recession in 1991 steering the company through difficult times before retiring permanently in 1997.  He died on 20 December 2012, aged 85.

Barratt Developments plc now employ around 4000 people and operate from 25 divisions throughout the UK.

In a major acquisition Barratt bought Wilson Bowden plc with it the David Wilson Homes brand for £2.7bn in April 2007 - just a year ahead of the market turmoil created by the "Credit Crunch." As part of the deal they also acquired Wilson Bowden Developments a commercial property construction and development company in the leisure, industrial, retail, and office sectors.
