History
Taylor Wimpey plc is a “focused” home building company with operations throughout the UK and in North America, Spain and Gibraltar.
Taylor Wimpey plc was formed after a “merger of equals” with George Wimpey on 3rd July 2007. Both businesses have a long trading history -Taylor Woodrow was formed in 1921 and George Wimpey as far back as 1880.
During the seventies decade, George Wimpey built 106,440 homes. In the decade that followed it began to establish the Wimpey brand with the famous Wimpey cat “welcome home” slogan. In 1996 Wimpey acquired McLean Homes from Tarmac in an asset swap, with its construction and quarrying operations being transferred to Tarmac which later became Carillion. Further acquisitions included Alfred McAlpine Homes in October 2001 for £463 million and Laing Homes in 2002 for £295 million.
Taylor Woodrow started out with Frank Taylor borrowing £100 and building two houses in Blackpool. His Uncle Jack Woodrow gave his name to the company as Frank at 16, was too young to form a company on his own. Over the years that followed the company expanded internationally, to become one of the World’s biggest construction companies.
In 2001 Taylor Woodrow made a successful take over of the Bryant Group. In October 2003 Taylor Woodrow acquired Wilson Connolly and the Wilcon Homes brand, for £499 million – the largest housing take-over at that time.
Taylor Woodrow was previously a FTSE Top 250 company and one of the UK's leading housing and development companies with operations in the United States, Canada and Spain.
