History

Established over 50 years ago, Bellway Plc is considered one of the top five house builders in the country building over 5000 new homes every year. Based in Newcastle, the company operates via 14 regional offices. Bellway has benefited from the trend towards the use of “brownfield” sites for new homes exceeding the government quotas for brownfield development.

Bellway started life as a small family business formed by John T. Bell operating in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area. The Bell company began to establish a reputation for affordably priced housing. During the 1950’s the company expanded and in the 1960’s had operations throughout northern England and into Scotland being listed on the London stock exchange in 1963. The company expanded into the south east in the 1970’s and became a true national house builder splitting from its parent company in 1979 to become Bellway Ltd. and a plc in 1981.

So far Bellway has not been involved in any mergers or acquisitions unlike their competitors, preferring to grow its business organically.
